10 Simple Secrets You Can Do To Today That Will Make You Happier…

As my “Happiness Coaching ” is taking off I have been reading and studying much about Happiness. In writing the info that I got from this book I must say that #8 something I am going to study a bit more, because we have never felt worse when we get home…. Share with me your experience around taking vacations! 

suzan-feature-smallHappiness is so interesting, because we all have different ideas about what it is and how to get it. So naturally we are obsessed with it.

I would love to be happier, as I’m sure most people would, so I thought it would be interesting to find some ways to become a happier person that are actually backed up by science. Here are ten of the best ones I found.

 

1. Exercise more – 7 minutes might be enough

You might have seen some talk recently about the scientific 7 minute workout mentioned in The New York Times. So if you thought exercise was something you didn’t have time for, maybe you can fit it in after all.

Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that it’s actually been proven to be an effective strategy for overcoming depression. In a study cited in Shawn Achor’s book, The Happiness Advantage, three groups of patients treated their depression with either medication, exercise, or a combination of the two. The results of this study really surprised me. Although all three groups experienced similar improvements in their happiness levels to begin with, the follow up assessments proved to be radically different:

You don’t have to be depressed to gain benefit from exercise, though. It can help you to relax, increase your brain power and even improve your body image, even if you don’t lose any weight.

We’ve explored exercise in depth before, and looked at what it does to our brains, such as releasing proteins and endorphins that make us feel happier, as you can see in the image below.

2. Sleep more – you’ll be less sensitive to negative emotionsWe know that sleep helps our bodies to recover from the day and repair themselves, and that it helps us focus and be more productive. It turns out, it’s also important for our happiness.

Using a face recognition task, here we demonstrate an amplified reactivity to anger and fear emotions across the day, without sleep. However, an intervening nap blocked and even reversed this negative emotional reactivity to anger and fear while conversely enhancing ratings of positive (happy) expressions.

Of course, how well (and how long) you sleep will probably affect how you feel when you wake up, which can make a difference to your whole day. Especially this graph showing how your brain activity decreases is a great insight about how important enough sleep is for productivity and happiness:

3. Move closer to work – a short commute is worth more than a big houseOur commute to the office can have a surprisingly powerful impact on our happiness. The fact that we tend to do this twice a day, five days a week, makes it unsurprising that its effect would build up over time and make us less and less happy.

4. Spend time with friends and family – don’t regret it on your deathbedStaying in touch with friends and family is one of the top five regrets of the dying. If you want more evidence that it’s beneficial for you, I’ve found some research that proves it can make you happier right now.

5. Go outside – happiness is maximized when we in Nature
Making time to go outside on a nice day also delivers a huge advantage; one study found that spending 20 minutes outside in good weather not only boosted positive mood, but broadened thinking and improved working memory…
6. Help others – 100 hours a year is the magical numberOne of the most counter-intuitive pieces of advice I found is that to make yourself feel happier, you should help others. In fact, 100 hours per year (or two hours per week) is the optimal time we should dedicate to helping others in order to enrich our lives.

7. Practice smiling – it can alleviate painSmiling itself can make us feel better, but it’s more effective when we back it up with positive thoughts, according to this study:

A new study led by a Michigan State University business scholar suggests customer-service workers who fake smile throughout the day worsen their mood and withdraw from work, affecting productivity. But workers who smile as a result of cultivating positive thoughts – such as a tropical vacation or a child’s recital – improve their mood and withdraw less.

8. Plan a trip – but don’t take one

As opposed to actually taking a holiday, it seems that planning a vacation or just a break from work can improve our happiness. A study published in the journal, Applied Research in Quality of Life showed that the highest spike in happiness came during the planning stage of a vacation as employees enjoyed the sense of anticipation: In the study, the effect of vacation anticipation boosted happiness for eight weeks. After the vacation, happiness quickly dropped back to baseline levels for most people.

9. Prayer & Meditate – rewire your brain for happiness

Important habit for improving focus, clarity and attention span, as well as helping to keep you calm. It turns out it’s also useful for improving your happiness:

In one study, a research team from Massachusetts General Hospital looked at the brain scans of 16 people before and after they participated in an eight-week course in mindfulness meditation. The study, published in the January issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, concluded that after completing the course, parts of the participants’ brains associated with compassion and self-awareness grew, and parts associated with stress shrank.

Meditation literally clears your mind and calms you down, it’s been often proven to be the single most effective way to live a happier live. I believe that this graphic explains it the best:

10. Practice gratitude – increase both happiness and life satisfactionThis is a seemingly simple strategy, but I’ve personally found it to make a huge difference to my outlook. There are lots of ways to practice gratitude, from keeping a journal of things you’re grateful for, sharing three good things that happen each day with a friend or your partner, and going out of your way to show gratitude when others help you.

#The great enemy of excellence is the pseudo-skill called multi-tasking.  To multi-task is to attempt to do multiple tasks simultaneously, which gives you the appearance of high productivity but at the expense of excellence.

First, narrow your focus to those few goals that will produce the highest return on investment.  To focus is to concentrate your attention and action toward a chosen goal to the exclusion of other lesser important things that are competing for your attention.
sproutsNext, instead of trying to juggle multiple, high intensity projects at one time, pick one and get it done!  You will accomplish more in less time by scheduling time on your calendar to accomplish each individual task and focusing all of your attention on one project to bring it to completion with excellence.  Take control of your projects instead of letting your projects control you.
The need to multi-task indicates a lack of clear priorities. What is most important? What is truly important vs. urgent?  Prioritize your projects then focus to finish the work at hand.
Are you easily distracted?  Distractions can destroy your discipline and paralyze your progress.  Create a distraction-free environment to produce your best work. Plan your calendar on a daily basis.  Eliminate unnecessary emails, time-wasting telephone calls, and just-dropping-by disturbances.  Clear your mind of random thoughts and get quiet to get centered.  Silence opens your mind to solutions and new strategies.
Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand.  The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.”  To accelerate, concentrate!

Pursue Your Potential With PTSD

courage posterThis morning I spent time studying more about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), after reading & listening about many of our men & women are coming home from the war dealing with this. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem that can occur after someone goes through a traumatic event like war, assault, or disaster. Make my heart ache to see the huge percentages having the looming our great men & women who have served our country.  Seems hopeless that there is not really anything that is helping, or giving a small glimmer of hope!

Let me know if you have found therapies or help from the medical side. Here is my input to all that I have learned, as I am not one that has had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD ~ have been a victim of  assault & raped, when I was only 12 yrs old. Lived a very reckless life for 16yrs…but that is not what I am sharing today. I do have my personal testimony on video.  At the age of 28 yrs old my life changed, in a wonderful & dynamic way. With those reading this that has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD I want to begin with letting you know that you are here reading for a purpose. You my friend are born with an unprecedented level of potential on the inside of you. You are filled to maximum capacity with gifts, talents, skills, ability, personality, & creativity.  What has happened to you is awful and has harbored you to move forward in your potential & purpose you are designed for. I know the challenges that you face, most can not relate to. Even through that~ I want to share with you away that I know & believe will change your life forever. You must be thinking there is so many area’s the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD has altered your vision & life, I believe it can be reversed.

Everything I have researched and looked at online for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD & Suicide dose not seem to be focused on rooting it out, but masking it with medication & claiming it like to yours.

Have you been offended? Has someone said something hateful or hurtful toward you? Shake it off! Offenses are like poisonous darts that can penetrate your heart and soul. To succeed, you must guard your heart from offenses.

 

The offense will come, but you can choose not to internalize it. Do not let the words or actions seep into your soul. When your mind is clouded and your heart is polluted with an offense, you cannot do your best work. It’s a distraction.

Do You Know What Is In Your Hand?

 n. hillToday is the first day of 2013~ I am so excited to see what new adventures are in store for me & my family. But as I think about YOU and how you will be used in this New Year, there is no stopping you.Every year at New Years, there’s lots of talk about change, resolutions, and making the next year better than the last.  You have the opportunity to co-create the life you really want to live.

So how exactly do you make that transformation?be different

Your prosperity grows exactly as fast as you do:  No faster, no slower.  The only way to really increase your wealth is to increase the value you provide.  And that means growing yourself.   You need daily self-development time, to work on your body, mind and soul.  You have to be learning new knowledge and developing new wisdom.  I believe this is best done in the morning, so you set your intention and create your consciousness for the whole day.

Learning to see the richness of the resources you already possess is a master key to your success. What can you do now, today, with what you already have to move forward toward your dreams and goals? Don’t get trapped in the quicksand of comparison, lamenting the talents, gifts, and opportunities of others while overlooking your very own. You are not lacking!

 Who is in your network? Which life experiences can you build onWhich talents can you begin to develop?

You are abounding with unique opportunities and untapped talents.  Take an inventory of your strengths, gifts, and resources. Open your eyes to your own opportunities. Which abilities come naturally and effortlessly that you can use today? 

 

Do not delay the pursuit of your dreams and goals because you believe you are unqualified to do so. The craving for more credentials will cause you to discredit what you already know and what you already can do. This can become a pursuit of validation rather than education. You are already well equipped and qualified to begin!

I love to grow daily, reading more, loving more~ adding more harmony into our lives. This past month has been one of most difficult times for me & my family. After losing my mom in October, then Holiday set in. I began a new 90 Day online Challenge with one of my mentors, so excited about truly getting my internet marketing to take off. Mid December I caught the worst flu bug I have ever had, I am the one who never gets sick. I was totally stopped in my tracks, stuck in bed. sprouts

As I became aware that I was not going to be able to do much, I knew one thing~ control my thoughts and visualize my desires & dreams. I listen consistently to powerful  messages about controlling my thought life. This was not a time for me to take a vacation from my thoughts. It would of been very easy to slide down hill and bury myself in pity. Instead I focused on everything that was going into my mind, and not letting any junk in. Which is why today I am writing about what we hold in our destiny…The best way to predict the future is to create it. – Peter Drucker

Learning is a lifelong journey. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. What is in your hand?

Make a list of actions you can do now, and begin today. Yes, you should always seek to gain more knowledge, skills, and strategies, but completing that objective is not a precursor to reporting to your starting line. Set your goals and GO!  discipline
